Reissue co-ordinated and compiled by Martin Hawkins. You canât judge a book by the cover, according to the song by Bo Diddley -- but you sure can tell a record made by Bo Diddley. For that reason, this is one of the most important discs in our Rocks series. Here is a full CD of truly original, groundbreaking rock and roll, presented as only Bo Diddley could, and as only Bear Family RecordsÂź can. Bo Diddleyâs music had a unique beat, an individuality, an âattitude,â and it formed part of the basic fabric of rock and roll during its heyday in the mid-1950s to the early â60s. There was normally a Bo Diddley disc on the American R&B charts in those years (11 in all) and 5 of them made the pop charts, too. The immediately recognizable âBo Diddley Beatâ was copied by some, but never as well, while many others weaved elements of his style into the rock music mainstream. From Buddy Hollyâs Not Fade Away, Dee Clarkâs Hey Little Girl, and Johnny Otisâ Willie And The Hand Jive through Freddy Cannonâs Buzz Buzz A-Diddle-It, Mac âDr. Johnâ Rebennackâs Storm Warning, to Magic Bus by The Who, and right on into further waves of later blues-rockers, Diddleyâs sound has become universal - a sub-genre unto itself. Elias Bates (known as Elias McDaniel, better known as Bo Diddley) was born in Mississippi in 1928 but grew up in Chicago. He became part of the music scene there â but his own unique part - and was a long-time staple of the Chess/Checker record company alongside Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. Bo Diddley always emphatically stated these words - and dared you to disagree: âI had no influences when I first started. I didnât have nobody to copy after, because I couldnât play blues. I was cut out to be what I am. And thatâs the reason why I try to be unique at what I am.â Bo Diddley was among the first groups of artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, in 1987. He died in 2008, aged 79.
