• Lyhyt kuvaus (from PIPELINE #22 - Spring 1994) These recordings were released in the period between 1962 and 1964 on various singles that show little influence from the burgeoning Beatle boom of the time. They are all guitar led apart from the two Diaboliques numbers where the organ takes over. This is best described as cheesey on their first offering but, with only a marginal change in sound, rises to the top like cream on Jackie. This excellent melody is delivered with pace and is topped off with lashings of tasty guitar. Four singles from Les Apaches open the CD, Colorado being the pick of the 8 tracks. A fine little mid tempo number with echoey lead, it is leagues ahead of the rest. These range from the loco-boogie of Nord-Express, the Nivram inspired Apalogie and the good-arrangement-in-need-of-a-melody Papoose to the uninspired and boring remainder. Dorians Break is an effective pacey two minutes while Jungle has duck-call and Tarzan FX mixed into an American-sounding 12-bar. Guitar Twist is based on the Guitar boogie format and The Jumpers' only instrumental here is a straight guitar reading of Chapel In The Moonlight. The Rowdies provide two real gems from their 1964 CBS single. The Camel is proud, strongly melodic and has a dramatic rhythm. The presence of some surface noise betrays its source does not really destroy the effect; we are, after all, listening to 30 year old singles here. There are absolutely no problems with Kafka. with its echoed damped picking slipping and sliding around it could so easily pass for one of those classic american space/surf singles so beloved of collectors. A truly fabulous find this one. The Silhouets offer a couple of pretty pieces, The Bonzos are notable for their amateurish enthousiasm, but the one remaining highlight comes from The Swallows. some expressive guitar and a Meeky chorus decorate the exotic, Taboo-like Sea Nymph and combine to provide an evocative performance. With four or five great tracks, a couple of them really outstanding, and total of 22 rare 60s instrumentals in all, this is one to collect and enjoy. (Alan Taylor)
