• Lyhyt kuvaus Two CD set featuring 58 titles from the catalogue of Derby Records a famous New York pop and R&B label – a new volume in Acrobat’s continuing series of vintage label profiles. Although existing for around five years the label threw up several stars in its short life. Lounge singer Jaye P.Morgan went on to serious all round show business fame in the USA. Honking saxman Freddie Mitchell scored some of the labels biggest hits and Eunice Davis’ “Rock Little Daddy” is another of those tracks sited by pundits as the ‘first rock and roll song’ it certainly wasn’t but it is very good. The label was owned by Larry Newton who had worked as a Sales Manager for Black & White Records, Joe Davis Records and Peak Records before setting up the Derby label. After the label folded Newton eventually became General Manager of the National major ABC-Paramount where he was involved in the signing of Ray Charles. Label started in 1949 as an R&B outlet but by early 1953 was almost a pure pop label. We have concentrated mostly on the labels blues, doowop, R&B and jazz output. Most of this material has never been available on a legitimate CD before.
