- Lyhyt kuvaus This second and final volume of Jack Ashfordâs independent soul productions, spanning 1967 to the mid-70s, is an equal to the first well-received compilation. It opens with the revered original version of Softouchâs âAfter You Give Your Allâ, sung by the co-writer Sandra Richardson, previously available only the 2016 100 Club anniversary single. Richardsonâs great Inter Soul 45 âDonât Let Me Downâ, from the same 1974 session, is also included, as are Softouch themselves with their highly prized Prodigal B-side âSay That You Love Me Boyâ. The Magnificentsâ âI Can Flyâ, from last yearâs 100 Club 45, is the original version of the song Jack Ashford sang as âIâll Fly To Your Open Armsâ on his âHotel Sheetâ album (this is the full version; the 45 was edited by 40 seconds). Ashford himself was a more than capable singer. Witness here âThis Ainât Just Another Dance Songâ and âLet Me Take Care Of Your Heartâ. His delivery of the latter is immaculate, a real ear-opener. Thanks to DJ Roger Banksâ acetate we have the original Lorraine Chandler version of âDonât Leave Me Babyâ, later covered by Ray Gant on Jay Walking, a notable Dave Godin Deep Soul Treasure. Speaking of Deep Soul, this CD is brimming with superb tracks of that ilk. There are beautiful newly discovered ballads from Billy Sha-Rae and Cecil Norman Jr but the one that will create a minor earthquake among genre fans is Eddie Parkerâs 1976 updating of âCrying Clownâ. Cut at the same sessions as his âBut If You Must Goâ masterpiece, it takes the great 60s ballad down a pace or two and features magnificent singing. Parkerâs overlooked Jay Walking single âCanât You See (What Youâre Doing To Me)â sounds great and label mates Ray Gant & the Arabian Knights deliver some social comment with âAirâ and âThe First Depressionâ. Back in the late 60s, Ashford placed a sultry instrumental on the Sir-Rah label by Detroit drummer J.C. Heard which utilised the track of Freddy Butlerâs Kapp 45 âThis Thingâ, a Pied Piper production. Al Gardnerâs âWatch Yourselfâ, which utilised the backing track of Willie Kendrickâs then-unissued âWatch Yourself (Sheâs Foolinâ You)â, was also placed on Sir-Rah, while the Four Sonicsâ compelling recording of âEasier Said Than Doneâ came out on the labelâs Sport subsidiary. Further group harmony tracks are provided by the Perfections and Four Sonics Plus One, while Billy Sha-Raeâs âIâm Goneâ is the great soul stomper of the set. ADY CROASDELL (Ace Records)
