A couple of years ago Joao contacted me about doing The L.A. Sessions (2008) at my studio. We hit it off musically and personally. I’ve been collecting rock and roll from other countries for a while—mostly Spain, Italy and Mexico—so I asked Joao about Brazil. He gave me about 15 hours of stuff, all of it good but none of it rock and roll! There were so many great songs, we decided to do some of them for our next project. With my Los Straitjackets partner, Eddie Angel, on guitar, Rob Douglas on bass also helping in the control room, and Ron Dziubla spicing things up, we learned the tunes, pushed record, and Presto! The best projects I’ve worked on have always been the easiest. This was a breeze. Pete Curry – November 2010 ¡panamericans! Joao Erbetta, guitar, came to the US in 2006, and in the short time he lived in the states managed to play the White House, Webster Hall, and the Monterey Jazz Festival, as well as all around New York and tours of the country. He’s back in Brazil but manages trips to Los Angeles, where The Pamamericans continue to work on new recordings. Eddie Angel, guitar, is well known around the world for his work with Los Straitjackets, The Neanderthals, The Planet Rockers and as a solo artist. An entire chapter is devoted to him in the book, “They Came to Nashville,” where he remains. Bassist Rob Douglas is a seasoned veteran, having worked with Pinetop Perkins, Chuck Profitt and Mike Stinson. He is currently performing and recording with Robert Francis’ band and The Gimme 5’s. The Panamericans’ release marks his debut on cowbell. Multi-instrumentalist and recordist Pete Curry is the drummer in the group. His credits include lead guitar with the long-running surf band The Halibuts, and bass in Los Straitjackets. He has worked with Duane Eddy, The Chocolate Watchband, The Neanderthals and Deke Dickerson and the Ecophonics on a variety of instruments. Ron Dziubla, saxophone, organ, melodica, has a resume that continues to grow. He’s toured with Ricky Martin, The Royal Crown Review, and Duane Eddy, as well as his own group, recently back from shows in Egypt, where he rode a camel.
