- Lyhyt kuvaus âPsychedelic Guitarsâ is Aceâs third collection of Jerry Coleâs 1960s recordings for the Crown and Custom labels. âHot Rod Twanginââ, the first in this series, showcased some of Jerryâs early R&B work as Billy Boyd and tracks from his hot rod-themed LPs of the mid-60s. The second, âGuitars A Go Goâ, found him playing some fierce disco-fuelled guitar wizardry. And when everybody started tuning in and dropping out, Crown turned to Jerry Cole to save the day. It was at this time that Crown launched Custom Records, the label on which his six psychedelic albums were released. Customâs first psychedelic LPs werenât psychedelic at all. Released as âPsychedelic Guitarsâ and âMore Psychedelic Guitarsâ, they were merely Jerryâs âGuitars A Go Goâ and âA Go Go Guitarsâ albums repackaged in new, splashy covers. But with the release of the Projection Companyâs âGive Me Some Lovinââ LP things started to get a bit more interesting. In 1966, avant-garde violinist and composer Paul Arnold hired Jerry and his main recording mates â Don Dexter, Norm Cass and Glenn Cass â to record a psychedelic concept album, âThe Inner Sounds Of The Idâ for RCA. At the same time, LA-based Alshire Records released the psychedelia-exploitation LP âThe Animated Eggâ, another album prized by collectors of the genre. Itâs not entirely clear which came first, âThe Idâ or âThe Eggâ, tracks and outtakes from both of which also appeared on Jerryâs Custom albums. The Projection Companyâs âGive Me Some Lovinââ LP contained three alternate takes from âThe Idâ: âWild Timesâ, âBoil The Kettleâ (with its Freudian psychobabble removed) and âI Love You, I Doâ. A down-in-the groove take on âThatâs The Way It Isâ from âThe Eggâ resurfaced as âTune Out Of Placeâ and the instrumental ââT Morrowâ had vocals added to become a pretty good version of Spencer Davisâ âGimme Some Lovinââ. New tracks included âWhat Elseâ, âUh, Uh, Uhâ and the standout âOur Man Hendrixâ. With the release of T Swift & The Electric Bagâs âAre You Experiencedâ album Jerry and crew must have really started to come on to the Orange Sunshine. On tracks such as âExpo In Soundâ and âFree Form In 6â Jerry waved his freak flag higher than most. âKimeaaâ is a classic in its own right, as is Jerryâs 12-string workout on âWhatâs Your Bag?â, and even the cover version of âAre You Experiencedâ is fun to listen to. While the title track is a rather dreadful affair, the Generation Gapâs âUp, Up And Awayâ album is actually quite good. âFoolâs Luckâ, âHard Timesâ and âStrange Shadowsâ are excellent instrumentals and âHigh On Loveâ and âLisaâ are good examples of Jerryâs writing skills and vocal ability. The Stone Canyon Rock Groupâs âMacArthur Parkâ album duplicates the same âIdâ material as the Projection Company LP. It also contains a repeat of âStrange Shadowsâ (re-titled âLight Showâ), the rockinâ âI Canât Stand Itâ and a couple of MOR vocal tunes. Jerry Cole was a space age, soul-surfinâ, hot roddinâ, go-goinâ, blues-pickinâ psychedelic ranger if there ever was one. Not many know these hard-to-find LPs even exist. I hope this compilation and the others in the series give listeners an opportunity to discover, re-evaluate and enjoy his unique and fun recordings for Crown and Custom. By Mike Vernon (Ace Records)
