Almost any musician can acquire the reputation of a legend or, at the most extreme, even end up "the last of his kind"" just by living a remarkably long life. On the other hand, rising to an iconic status can also signify creating a goal-oriented career spanning decades without compromising on quality, while believing in one's own work from the very beginning - even in those moments when commercial popularity has failed to comprehend how to reward its creator. The latter description fits Hayden Thompson particularly well. Born in Booneville, Mississippi in 1938, the singer had the proper playing cards for success in his hands: enough talent, looks, charisma and a stylistic instinct, to say the least, squeezed into the same package, whereby he would have undeniably competed for the spotlight on the same line with giants like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins, had the opportunity for a breakthrough just come a few years earlier. Thompson had already managed to make his debut recording for the small Von Records operating in his hometown in late 1954 but was offered a real opportunity to reach the national consciousness only in the fall of 1957 in Memphis, Tennessee at Phillips International, a member of Sam Phillips' Sun group of companies. The explosive rockabilly cover of Junior Parker's blues song Love My Baby later established its status as an undisputed classic of its genre, but even this release didn't make Thompson a star of the hit lists. Hayden sought his next big break as a country act, operating from Chicago. It proved fruitful in the 1960s as evidenced by the debut album released by the widely distributed Kapp label in 1966, and appearances at key country shrines such as Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Times were, however, changing and many professionals eventually had to give way to new artists and musical waves. Thompson also withdrew from the scene for years, only to return even more powerfully in the mid-1980s, mainly with the appreciative support of European record labels and fellow players. The most effective of the collaborative partnerships turned out to be the Finnish Bluelight Records with its top-notch session line-ups. The influence of Hayden's colleagues from the days of Sun Records had not evaporated from his very essence at this point either but was instead conveyed through his new production in a most natural, respectful and, with age, increasingly exciting way. This new compilation, partly consisting of previously unreleased material, is specifically dedicated to the rootsy musical tradition that springs from the warmth of the Memphis sun, a tradition which Hayden Thompson himself had been creating almost 70 years ago.
