- Lyhyt kuvaus Rock & Roll arrived in the UK in gradual stages, between December 1954, when Bill Haley first charted with ‘Shake, Rattle & Roll’, and May 1956, when Elvis crashed into our lives with ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ and changed the musical (and social) landscape forever. By the time the latter bit us on our collective bum, we’d started to get to grips with R&R here in the UK – or at least, we thought we had, although in hindsight a lot of early British Rock & Roll can best be described as ‘quaint’. With the benefit of further hindsight, we’d actually clambered on board the R&R bandwagon a couple of years earlier, albeit unwittingly. Indeed, as early as 1952, Lita Roza, with the Ted Heath Orchestra, had recorded a tremendous version of Ella Mae Morse’s US hit ‘Oakie Boogie’, whilst Jack Parnell (also in the company of the Ted Heath Orchestra) had cut Hardrock Gunter’s ‘Birmingham Bounce’, two numbers which are nowadays seen as embryonic R&R. Although a number of ex-Skifflers switched to R&R when Skiffle began to lose popularity, there can be no real doubt that the catalyst for home-grown R&R was the arrival of Tommy Steele, in October ’56, with the self-penned ‘Rock With The Caveman’. Within weeks, record companies were signing other aspiring young rockers, and Tommy was soon joined on record (and in some instances, in the charts) by guys like Terry Dene, Wee Willie Harris, Marty Wilde, Jim Dale, Laurie London, Vince Eager, Ricky James, Terry Wayne, Larry Page, Dickie Bennett, the Most Brothers, - and even his own brother, Colin Hicks! And, of course, plenty of the ‘old school’ showbiz establishment were quick to try and cash in on what they doubtless thought was merely the latest, short-term dance craze (a la The Mambo), to which end, artists like Frankie Vaughan, The Southlanders, Dennis Lotis, Don Lang, The King Brothers, the Kirchin Brothers Band, The Johnston Brothers, The Stargazers and a few refugees from the Jazz fraternity, like Ray Ellington, Tony Crombie and Rory Blackwell, were in there with quick-off-the-mark covers versions, of varying merit. The girls soon got in on the act, as well, with Alma Cogan, Suzie Miller, the Beverley Sisters, Joan Savage, Marion Ryan - even the likes of Anne Shelton, Lita Roza and Pauline Shepherd - covering US hits. This 128-track 4-CD boxed set presents a comprehensive history of the birth of British Rock & Roll and features everyone who played a part.
