- Lyhyt kuvaus With 28 instrumental tracks in under 70 minutes you know this just has to be a collection of sixties recordings, but where do they dig them up from ?! Rarity Records are clearly working with a dedicated collector for no less than nine of the tracks were only ever released as private recordings on small labels or as promotional gifts, even two flexi disc releases are included! The most remarkable thing is the quality of the sound, either the original tapes have been traced or some has done a marvellous job removing evidence of disc as the source. Musically, as you might expect, it's a mixed bag with the material being the weak spot in the most cases. The Shell Beat is a suitable disguised and rocked up version of the old petrol company's promotional song, there's no hiding place on its flip however. Es Lilin is a jaunty, Eastern flavoured piece with a deal of charm. Still with guitars, Ivy's March is more strident with a chunky rhythm and this harsher, sparse approach is also taken on Come A Little Closer with its Latin rhythm. Little Henny's boys offer a couple of cheesy sax-led pieces from 1961 and the Six Tornados' single from 1965 is also uninspiring with its knees-up treatment of a traditional melody. Sounding remarkably good are The Revolts whose pretty Pelita was a flexi disc pressed in the same year. The Ricochets have a great metallic echoey sound to their guitars, their 1963 single is full of melody and rhythm - an excellent two sider. The Rollers' railroad impersonation is very well executed even if it doesn't really go anywhere and Violetta is standard Dutch Indo fare. The Royal Teens were on a String-A-Longs kick for their 1962 single, not my style I have to admit. The Condors had their Humoresque as a flexi single, quite a bunch version this and surely not taken from disc. The two Shadows covers by The Sound Magic's emerged on a Discofoon single, the Dutch equivalent of the UK Embassy label. More than simply competent, these 1963 covers have a certain charm. Kootanda is a bouncy Mrs. Mills style piano tinkler that seems out of place here apart from a duet with guitar at the end. With just a hint of crackle come the deep and dramatic Silhouette Walk from 1961 and then The Triffids with stabbing organ in support of the lead guitar. Flip Willemsen presents a lightweight traditional melody, both it and The White Jumpers bouncy San Antonio Rose being small label releases in the early sixties. Just when things seem to be getting into a bit of a rut, along come The Jumpers with their quite superb Chariot. A Belgian group, but we'll forgive them that, this stirring ballad was a Decca single in 1965. From the previous year, their Week-End single Chapel In The Moonlight comes complete with string section but pales in comparison. Things are looking up however and next we have the magnificent Sea Nymph from The Swallows. Another 1964 Week-End single (and another Belgian group) it borrows unashamedly from The Shangaans' Taboo, adding swishing effects and a touch of sympathetic vocal chorussing that builds the atmosphere. A truly fine slice of instrumental drama. It's back to 1962 to close the set, Golden Earrings is a great number and this is a solid cover whilst Rockin' To Telstar contains a few guitar tricks to keep the interest going. This CD is a must for the collector and offers a few tempting tracks for the less committed. If only someone would do the same for the UK, or France, or..... (Alan Taylor, Editor, Pipeline Magazine)
