  • Lyhyt kuvaus Hendrix. Born in Miami, Florida, on November 12, 1934. The son of a butcher and a housewife who played guitar and sang, Clyde Allen Hendrix was captivated by the sounds of the Grand Ole Opry at an early age, learning to play guitar at his teens in an attempt to emulate his big idol, Hank Williams. Al’s interest in singing and playing guitar led him to try his luck in a few talent contests around Odessa, Texas (where the Hendrix family had relocated in the late forties) but, even though he won first place in one and second place in another, he decided to enlist in the Army in 1953 and spent the next three years in the service, half of the time in Korea. Discharged in 1956, with the Rock’n’Roll madness hitting the nation, Hendrix settled in Bakersfield, California, and he was quick to participate in the active music scene of the town. Among some other local musicians, Al met the double bass player Joe Keplinger and short after he became the lead singer of his band, Jolly Jody and His Go Daddies. Together, Hendrix and Keplinger wrote a couple of songs (“Rhonda Lee” and the instrumental number “Go Daddy, Rock”) that were issued by Tally Records, a local label cofounded by Fuzzy Owen and his cousin Lewis Talley, two well-known names in music clubs in and around Bakersfield. Released on January 1958, the record did well in regional markets and ABC-Paramount, a much bigger company than Tally, made an offer to put out the tracks under its own imprint. This could have opened the door to success for Al Hendrix, but the newly released single failed to produce the desired commercial response. However, Al did some TV appearances, club gigs and was finally offered a deal with La Gree Records, doing his best known record for this L.A. company in 1960. Including “Young and Wild” and “I Need You”, both written by Hendrix himself, the record got good airplay in California and Texas and even made some local charts but that was it. Al would have to wait two more years before seeing another release under his name, this time on Pike Records, back in Bakersfield. Owned by Roy Flowers and singer Leon Hart, Pike label backed the great “Monkey Bite” (another Hendrix-Keplinger composition) with “For Sentimental Reasons”, although the record had limited distribution, in part because the explicit lyrics on “Monkey Bite”. Hendrix continued playing up and down in California clubs, county fairs and also in TV and radio shows, enjoying some minor popularity before moving to Auburn, in Northern California. In recent years he has been rediscovered, just in time to headline shows in Europe and the United States. As they say, you are never too old to rock. Skipping the slow tracks, this record compiled the four Rockin’ sides originally released by Al Hendrix between 1958 and 1962, when he was trying to make it big with Rock’n’Roll while having a real ball. “Young and wild, that’s my style, that’s me”. Oh, Yeah!
